Be Spiritual - Episode 16

Gail Donahue is our guest for Episode 16 of Be Spiritual. Gail was raised Irish Catholic, both religiously and culturally. Ironically, it was the Catholic Church that pointed her to Unitarian Universalism. Today, Gail considers herself a proud atheist with a church — not at all paradoxical for a UU.

During the conversation, you'll hear Gail refer to Cakes for the Queen of Heaven. If you're interested in more information about this curriculum in feminist theology, check this web site.

Episode 16 runs about 37 minutes. You may listen with the above audio player, download the mp3 file here, or access it via iTunes.

Be Spiritual - Episode 14

Episode 14 features Burns Fisher and his path from Congregationalist to atheist, Religious Humanist, and Unitarian Universalist.

Our conversation touches on a couple of interesting topics, worthy of further contemplation and discussion: religious faith compared with faith in science, and whether being liberal spiritually requires one to be liberal politically.

Listen and then share your thoughts by posting a comment on this website or the Be Spiritual Facebook page.

Be Spiritual - Episode 13

Episode 13 features the continuing spiritual journey of John Sanders. From a childhood of limited religious exposure, John has assembled a rich potpourri of coexisting beliefs and practices: Religious Humanist, Panentheist, Buddhist, Universalist, and Unitarian Universalist. Listen to John’s and my conversation to understand how they fit together.

John serves as President of the Board of the Northern New England District of the Unitarian Universalist Association and President of the Board of the Universalist Heritage Foundation. Previously he was President of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Nashua.

Be Spiritual - Episode 6

As noted in last weekend's post, Episode 6 features an interview with Robert Wright, author of the book The Evolution of God.

During our conversation, he outlined how human perceptions of God have evolved over the millennia, discussed the constructive role religion can play in modern society, and shared his own spiritual views. I wish we had more time to delve into each of these areas — but you can find much more in the book. You can also read excerpts and more about the author at The Evolution of God web site.

While not a Unitarian Universalist, Robert Wright is, I think it's fair to say, a fellow seeker and a good companion for the religious journey.

Be Spiritual - Episode 3

In this episode, Roy Goodman shares his spiritual journey from Judaism to atheism. Roy's views were shaped by the shadow of the Holocaust; the apartheid of South Africa, where he was born and grew up; and Israel, where he attended college.

Places stir Roy's sense of awe at the universe and life, and he finds meaning in connection and relationship. Interestingly, Roy ascribes evil to a lack of connection — particularly when it springs from the belief that my truth is better than your truth.

Be Spiritual - Episode 1

In this inaugural episode of Be Spiritual, I speak with Ellen McCormick, a long time Unitarian Universalist (UU) and member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Nashua, New Hampshire.

Ellen's father died when she was only 10, which prompted a lifetime of questioning. Listen to Ellen's story of her journey from Catholicism to Humanism and Unitarian Universalism.
